Steve Hackett Product Reviews  by Andy Garibaldi of CD Services

Genesis Files

OK - so the title tells a slightly misleading story - I suppose what they mean is that he used to be in Genesis and that 11 of the 20 tracks here are taken from the "Genesis Revisited" album, but I also imagine that what they want you to think is that the album is either all Genesis covers or includes tracks from his days with Genesis.

So, bearing in mind that it doesn't, what's the point?  If you are a full-time Hackett fan who has to have everything, then fair enough. If you are a fan but just get all the 'real' albums, then, equally, fair enough. But if you are a Genesis fan or a fan of Hackett's '70's/'80's work but haven't had the confidence to check him out in the '90's and beyond, then this value-for-money double CD is the ideal place to start, particularly as you'll find 11 Genesis covers on here that are actually really good.

Of the rest, some of the best tracks have been taken from three or four other relatively recent albums, and the set as a whole acts as a valuable guide to where he's at, musically these days, in fact, as a toe-in-the-water process, it's arguable that, if you get this, whether you need to go further, so bear that in mind ye faint-hearted ones.
